Millimeter wavelength radiation is a subset of the microwave radio frequency spectrum, belonging to the group of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation. Due to the increasing ubiquity of millimeter wave radiation, research into its potential biological effects is ongoing. Though there is no specialized study pointing at the associated health risks, the WHO (World Health Organization) IARC (International Agency for Research in Cancer) in 2013 classified non-ionizing radiation such as millimeter waves or microwaves, as “2B”, which means “possibly carcinogenic to humans”.

Another type of widely used full body scanner is the Backscatter Scanner, which is based on the low density X-ray, a form of ionizing radiation. Chengdu’s “Weak Photon Full Body Screening System”, mentioned in the beginning of the article, is based on “low dose X-ray”. In another word, these two scanners are using similar technology.

The backscatter scanners are banned in the European Union. In 2012, the last backscatter x-ray machines were removed from the Manchester Airport following the principle of the European Union- 'in order not to risk jeopardizing citizens' health and safety.' The United States removed all the machines from its airports in 2013, following severe public disputes.
